As an Anglo-phone Fellow in this program, I changed the approach to English Language learning in the town I was posted to. From the text-book approach to learning through games, competition, team work and media, the students’ moved from knowing almost nothing to understanding English Language.

Just a couple of days into the start of my Ecuadorian experience, the Ministry of Education decided to make me the coordinator of the students’ hostel. I was responsible for developing projects and nighttime activities that encourages teamwork, leadership, confidence and values among the students. My tenure meant the students did their homework more often and better, slept on time, learned life skills and became more confident with other cultures.

In November 2016, I was part of an English Immersion Camp organized by the Ministerio de Educación Nacional de Colombia, the Heart for Change foundation and the teacher training university ÚNICA. The program just in it’s second year of implementation improved spoken English and pedagogy skills among public school teachers across Colombia. I had the pleasure of developing and executing activity-based classes with a team of Fellows from 5 continents of the world.

Before this, I had also participated in a similar program for secondary students in July 2016. In the camp, I was the leader of the News Team where students learn things about information gathering and presentation ranging from story telling to cinematography and survey research.

In Colombia, I led English classes for students in a secondary school under the Ministry of Education’s English Teaching Fellowship Program. I also developed and delivered fun-filled cultural activities including the English Club, the Spelling Bee, the English Day and Halloween Celebrations. Being in a pool of over 400 Fellows from 40 countries working in different cities, I had the support of a team of teachers, fellows, students and educational administrators.

In September/October 2016, a group of unrelenting young people set out to organize the largest independence day conference in Nigeria. It was tagged My Dream Nigeria and I was part of this group of individuals. Backed by Microsoft Nigeria, Coca Cola and other companies, the conference brought together thought-leaders in Western Nigeria to think about and inspire the youth for the actualization of the Nigeria of our dreams. As a key member of the Social Media Team, I was responsible for publicizing the event before it started, taking pictures during the event and updating the world on Social Media as things unfolded.
